Businesses selling product to the State of California, are required by law, to provide clear and reasonable warnings to consumers, prior to exposing them to any chemical risk. The law has been in force since 1986 under the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act.

Prop 65 seeks to protect Californian citizens from chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or reproductive harm. There are over 900 chemicals identified by the State of California with the latest lists available here.

Unless the chemical exposure is low enough to pose no significant risk then a label must be displayed on the product or packaging. There may be instances where a product is labelled in compliance with Prop 65 and sold in other US states, or territories, and therefore customers will receive product or packaging displaying the Prop 65 labels
